It is located at Port Phillip Bay, in St Kilda, Victoria – a suburb of Melbourne. J.D.Williams of Warner Brother’s fame was the instigator in creating this Luna Park together with the three Phillip Brothers who were veterans in the field of amusement and the cinema industry.
Original attractions at the Park included the Scenic Railway, River Caves of the World, the Giggle Palace, American Bowl Slide, a while you wait photo studio – a novelty and big hit at the time, and a Penny Arcade (slot machines).
With the advent of the World Wars the Park assumed a patriotic approach depicted in many of the rides and decorations. An extensive overhaul during the war period when the Park was closed saw a face lift for the Park with more rides such as a water chute, the Big Dipper Roller Coaster, a four row carousal and Noah’s Ark being added.
Further additions during the periods between the wars included Dodgem Cars, the Rotor and a Ghost Train. The 60’s and 70’s era gradually saw the introduction of modern mechanical rides which worked alongside the old and made Luna Park the preferred amusement park by both young and old.
In recent years however the park had to be re modified and only the entry point with its towers, the charming carousal, the scenic railway- which holds the record for the longest operating roller coaster which has been in continuous operation- and the ghost train together with the Dodgems Building still remain and are functional.
Adventure seekers, children and adults all find their own unique place at Luna Park which especially comes alive at night with its twinkling host of lights and central entertainment area.
