The view from Above - West Pearl Tower Chengdu

  • i
Sentinel like standing 339 meters tall over the ancient city of Chengdu, dominating its skyline, the sleek post modern concrete West Pearl Tower supported on 3 legs, holds aloft a red pod clutched in three fingerlike extensions reminiscent of a rocket about to head heavenward. Construction on the tower started in 1992 but was halted due to budget constraints. It commenced again in 1998 and was finally completed in 2004. With the distinction of being the 4th tallest tower in China and 27th in the world, the tower was only intended to service the telecommunications sector but has since been expanded to include a revolving restaurant, an observation deck, a mall and other recreation facilities. The project is said to have cost around US$ 800 million.

The West Pearl Tower is now the main telecommunications service provider for the 10 million inhabitants of the city. The seventeen level edifice is the main broadcaster of FM radio, VHF and UHF television broadcasting systems. The upgrading of the radio and television broadcasting systems was to rationalize and consolidate several smaller broadcasting systems scattered around the city’s outskirts and to have a digital TV ready broadcasting facility. A new antenna system was installed in 2007 to facilitate this.

Access to the various levels of the tower is by seven high speed elevators. Once up there visitors have superb uninterrupted views of Chengdu city from the observation deck. The tower is currently undergoing modifications to add leisure, dining and shopping facilities and some interesting features to attract visitors. It is scheduled to welcome the public back again in mid 2012. The area around the tower is also being spruced up with shopping areas, cafés and a public park. The tower is indeed a worthy landmark for a city that is said to have been founded 2000 years ago.

The newest addition to the city’s hospitality industry, Millennium Chengdu with its location in the most fashionable area of the city amidst stylish boutiques, cafés and entertainment areas and just minutes away from business areas offers business and leisure travellers well appointed modern rooms and elegant suites with great views of the city.
