General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum is a must see when in Chongqing. This museum was opened to the public in 1991 in memory of an American general, Joseph W. Stilwell, who contributed immensely to the people of China. General Joseph W. Stilwell came to China in 1942 where he worked as the Commander in Chief of the American Army in the China Burma India Theater and as the Chief of Staff in the China Theatre of Operations. During this time the general became very close with the people of China and served with them side by side. The museum was the residence of the general and consists of three stories including an office, several bedrooms, two meeting rooms and a basement. Furniture dating back to the Second World War era and more than hundred articles, uniform and the manuscripts worn by the general are on display.
