Abu Dhabi Wildlife Centre- Spend a Day Among the Big Cats

  • i

Abu Dhabi is an oasis in a large, unforgiving desert. It stands like a modern miracle, a place of beauty, prosperity and adventure. Tourists have always gravitated to Abu Dhabi for a myriad of reasons. The city offers excellent shopping opportunities, and boasts very modern infrastructure and amenities. The nearby desert provides plenty of opportunities for adventure. The climate is free of rain throughout the year, and the beaches are simply gorgeous, the waters warm and inviting.

The city is known for its dedication to greening the environment, and preserving wildlife. The Abu Dhabi Wildlife Centre is one example of the city's continued action towards helping wildlife. The centre is located behind the Al Wathba Lake, accessible by the Al Ain road, a little outside Mussaffah. It was founded by Ronel Smuts, with the backing of the Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan., little over a decade ago. Starting only with a small group of cheetah cubs, the park has expanded and now holds wolves, tortoises, lions, crocodiles and tigers (including a pair of rare Siberian tigers).

Visiting hours are between 9 and 5 every day except for Thursdays and Fridays, when the centre is closed to the public. Other than the chance to witness some of nature’s most magnificent creatures, the Wildlife Centre also offers guided tours, the main objective being to educate the public on the importance of preserving these amazing beasts. Most of the animals at the centre have been rescued from private owners, who hold them illegally. The Wildlife Centre acts as a sanctuary for these animals, and works towards rehabilitating them. In addition to that, the centre also has a conservation programme, focusing on the perpetuation of large cats, such as cheetahs and tigers.
