Retaining its colonial hill station atmosphere, the captivating city of Nuwara Eliya is located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. Having a temperate climate and a magnificent landscape, the outskirts of this glorious city are dotted with red-roofed bungalows, charming rose gardens and hedges in contrast to the concrete tangle dominating the town centre. One can opt to either go fishing or boating in the charming Lake Gregory or simply visit various attractions including the 18-hole golf course or the popular Queen Victoria Park.

A tranquil oasis situated at the heart of the city, Queen Victoria Park sprawls across a total area of 27 acres. The park is visited by many bird species including Scaly Thrush, Pied Thrush, Kashmir Flycatcher and Indian Blue Robin, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and is said to have been named to commemorate Queen Victoria’s 60th Jubilee Coronation.

A fantastic place to bask in the natural splendour taking in spectacular mountain scenery and fresh air, the park nurtures a wide variety of flora. It is during April that the colourful flower blossoms adorn the park, a time when the most number of visitors flock to the city.
Originally been used as the Haggala Botanical Garden’s research field, the quality of the park was greatly improved with the series of recent renovations and additions. Several lakes that flow through the park enhance its allure, making it a leading tourist attraction in the region.

The city boasts an array of various other attractions including Horton Plains National Park, a major wildlife area abundant in greenery. Among the various species found here are the endemic Purple-faced Langur, Sambar, Leopard and more. It is also home to endemic highland birds such as Yellow-eared Bulbul and Dull-blue Flycatcher. The stunning Baker Falls and the well visited World’s End are also part of the plains.
