  • i

Warwick Castle in Warwick, Warwickshire is located along the banks of the Avon River, eight miles from Stratford on Avon. Built in 1608 by William the Conqueror, it was used as a stronghold till the 17th century when it was converted into a country house. Since its construction the castle underwent several structural changes resulting in one of the most outstanding examples of 14th century military architecture. It is currently owned by the Tussauds Group of Madame Tussauds Wax Museum fame.

Special events take place throughout summer including jousting. The events are designed to provide entertainment while ensuring authenticity. Annual passes are available for the events. Heightening the medieval experience, the castle has its own archery expert and blacksmith producing customized armor and weapons for the events. In keeping with the medieval atmosphere the castle staff wear period costumes made in the castle.

Many exhibits inside the castle are open to the public. Three floors depict life in the castle during a simpler period in history. There are life size exhibits depicting medieval crafts and the castle during the period of Richard Neville, who was the most powerful man in England during the period of King Henry V. These exhibits are commonly displayed in the basement called the Undercroft. The state rooms and the Great Hall on the ground floor are lavishly decorated and furnished in a 17th century manner. Several bedrooms are furnished for royal visits according to the period that the event took place.

A fine collection of well preserved medieval armor can be found in the castle armory. One of the exhibits is a helmet worn by the great military leader Oliver Cromwell in the civil war in the 17th century.

Medieval life can be experienced camping on the castle grounds where visitors can stay in period encampments and partake in daily rituals common for the time.
